The Forest is a "participatory project and every citizen can buy a seedling and contribute to the Srebrenica forest. Trees are longer-lived than people, and with the forest, we give physical space to the victims to be with us again, but they also bring us back to life," said Mia David, adding that the work was accompanied by reflection on what can be done in physical space if it is not available, as well as that ‘the solution is to turn to private properties in the era of liberal capitalism when public spaces are not at our disposal’.”
Antonio Grgić added that the competition was followed by asking questions and thinking about how to build a monument in a country that does not want that monument, and that this question is not unique to Serbia, but also Croatia.
Artists from Serbia and art collectives with at least one member from Serbia participated in the competition for the art award "Praznina / The Void", to create memorial solutions that will commemorate the genocide in Srebrenica.
The idea of the "Praznina / The Void" contest was to create commemorative initiatives that testify to the necessity of remembrance that is not only based on the ethnicity of the victims, but also on the places where they are remembered. By showing the ideological framework and regime of truth that led to the crime, the memory of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica will be able to live in Serbia as a permanent guarantee of peace in the region.
The joint project "Advocacy, Artivism and Education to End Genocide Denial and Strengthen Reconciliation Process" by Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia, forumZFD Serbia, and Independent Journalists’ Association is supported by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which supports efforts to establish a participatory culture of remembrance, regional cooperation, and reconciliation in the Western Balkans region.
