Israel & Palestine: the role and function of religion

Conflict potential and opportunities for communication in the interconnected network of Judaism – Zionism – the State of Israel in its relationship to Christianity and Islam in the region
The situation:

Israel is not an exclusively Jewish-Israeli state. Here the most diverse ethnic and religious minorities live, who for the most part have little mutual contact. In cases where there is contact, discrimination and/or marginalization often plays a role whereby existing conflicts receive fresh sustenance. Moreover, one can observe that the social situation, career prospects and the associated financial options as well as political views and the possibilities of exerting influence vary considerably and are often based on the given person’s affiliation to an ethnic or religious grouping.

What we are doing:

The aim of the project is to incorporate representatives of the various social groups in Israel in an exchange with regard to their situation and to point out to them common options of a stronger political involvement. The project is intended to address representatives of the Arabian Israelis of Muslim and Christian faith and the Mizrahim (Jews from the Arab world as well as other Muslim countries). Invitations to cooperate are being currently extended to Bedouins from the Negev, immigrants from the former Soviet Union and other ethnic groups. Each of the ethnic and religious minorities has its own specific needs and feelings. This opens up conflict potential, but also communication opportunities between them. Exploring and intensifying the latter is the aim of the project.
If in this way coalitions can be created between these social groups and the Israeli majority, which would then provide them with easier access to democratic structures and the decision-makers within them. “Our intention is for the image of and the trust in the society to change with regard to its active shaping from within”, says peace consultant Suzanna Lauterbach, “which should ultimately also lead to an improvement in the social situation.”
