Bosnia and Herzegovina: Living with Differences

Strengthening dialogue and cooperation structures in the Derventa/Brod/Doboj region
The situation:

The divisions cemented due to the fierce fighting with reciprocal expulsions during the 1992-95 war between Bosnian Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks exist to this very day: ethnic segregation in the Derventa-Brod region primarily divides the Bosnian Serbs and Croats; in Doboj, more the Serbs and Bosniaks. Potential for conflict also exists between the “long-time residents”, immigrant refugees and potential returnees of all ethnicities with regard to the distribution of economic and social resources. At a national level, there is no discussion of the past. The significance of civil society decreased dramatically in the years following the decline of international aid. There is a lack of structures and of social participation for the development of a sustainable peaceful coexistence, and the sensitive process of reconciliation between Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks remains crucial for the necessary mutual recognition of responsibility during the war period.

Fifteen years after the 1995 signing of the Dayton Agreement, the fundamental question of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the international “protectorate” remains open: can and does Bosnia and Herzegovina wish to remain together and to transform themselves into a viable, functioning state with a vision of a shared future?

What we are doing:

The aim of the project run in cooperation with the Caritas association of the archdiocese of Sarajevo is to establish sustainable structures for peace work, dialogue and cooperation in the Derventa/Doboj region. Peace consultants Annett Werner and Michele Parente develop activities within several working areas in cooperation with the multi-ethnic local team: the networking and empowerment of local NGOs, training on non-violent communication and conflict transformation, constructive debates on the past as well as support for the religious communities’ potential for peace.
Cocrete activitis are among others:

- Organisation of the International Day of Peace with effective public initiatives by the NGO sector in Derventa and Doboj.

- International youth encounters between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany: “Škola Mira”.

- Seminars for multipliers on non-violent communication and on dealing with conflict: “…ali nenasilno!".

- Transfer of the war veterans’ conflict resolution potential to young people for the prevention of violence.
Interfaith dialogue events.

pax christi wishes to make its vision of setting up a resource centre for peace work a reality together with the existing local network, REMI (Regionalne Mirovna Inicijativa). In addition to the necessary organisation development and public relations work and to the cooperation with local authorities, activities are increasingly being run in collaboration with the 15 network members. The project is financed by the Civil Peace Service (ZFD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
